Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Types of Tiles are There?

There are 3 types of tiles as Wall Tile, Floor Tile and Porcelain Tile according to their structure.

Wall Tile:
• Fired at 1.050 -1.100 degrees.
• Water absorption ratio or in other words, porosity ratio is between 10% and 20%.
• Suitable only for use on wall in internal areas.
• Not designed for use on floor.
• Not resistant to frost.

Floor Tile:
• Fired at 1.100 -1.150 degrees.
• Harder and more resistant than wall tiles.
• Suitable for use on walls if desired.
• Water absorption ratio or in other words, porosity ratio is between 0,5%  and 3%.
• Glaze on surface is harder than wall tiles. Therefore, it is corroded less.
• Resistant to frost.

Porcelain Floor Tile:
• Fired at 1.150 - 1.200 degrees.
• More resistant than other two tiles.
• The most appropriate tiling material for indoor areas such as terrace, balcony, corridor etc. and also external areas such as entrance of apartment building, stairs and around the swimming pool.
• Water absorption ratio or in other words, porosity ratio is less than 0,5%.
• Resistant to frost.
• Suitable for use on floor and wall and indoors and outdoors.

Which is The Best Tile?

Tiles should be correctly chosen according to their fields of use. There is no best tile. There is incorrectly chosen tile. Floor, wall or porcelain tile should be chosen according to the area of use.

Why is Their Ceramic Thickness Different?

Thickness of ceramic tiles depends upon size and structure. There is no difference of thickness between tiles with different surface structure and different size.

How Should I Choose The Right Product for My Home?

Please Refer to Key Points to Choose Wall Tile

How a Ceramic Tile is Drilled?

Special drill bits are required, they should be supplied from hardware stores.

. Which Adhesive Should be Used for Glass Products? Which Grouting Should be Used?

We recommend that you use white VitrA Fix Flex Rapid and VitrA Fix Flex 0-3 mm grouting for glass products. Do not use cold or hot silicone to fix glass tiles.

How a Glass Tile is Drilled, Cut?

Cut it by using a diamond drill, cutter and square. Drilling should be performed with water at slow cycle and in two directions. Using ceramic cutter is not recommended. For your own safety, you should wear goggles and glove while working.

What Should I do for a Broken Tile at Home?

First of all, it will be very useful for you to buy 1 or 2 boxes more tile so that you can use them for future repairs. Also, if you provide the nearest VitrA dealer with the product code of the broken tile and tonality and calibration numbers, they will try to find the tile of the same tonality and calibration for you. Code, tonality and calibration details are indicated on the box. Therefore, we recommend that you don’t throw away your box or white down these details.

Where is The Nearest VitrA Dealer?
What is The Difference Between Floor Tile and Porcelain Tile?

Both floor tile and porcelain tile are resistant to frost. However, we recommend that you use porcelain floor tile for external areas in too cold regions or in the regions where there is a high difference of temperature between day and night. Porcelain tile should be chosen for the floors on which too many loads are placed or for high traffic areas because its resistance to breaking is higher.

Is Tiling Without Grouting Possible?

In practice, tiling without grouting or tiling with zero grouting is not recommended. Even for rectified products, minimum 1 mm and better yet, 2 mm grouting is recommended.

What Does Mosaic Mean?

7x7 cm and less Ceramic tiles are called Mosaic. Before placing Mosaics into boxes, they are pasted on 30x30 cm mesh for the purpose of easy tiling.

Why Should I Use Tile Instead of Natural Stone?

Maintenance-free and easy-to-apply porcelain tiles that impose less stress/load on the building can be chosen instead of natural stone. Moreover, their new surface design resembles Natural Stone.

Why Should I Use Tile Instead of Wood?

Wooden floors and parquets require maintenance from time to time and they should be protected against water. However, maintenance-free porcelain tiles that do not suffer any damage when comes into contact with water can be chosen instead of wooden floor. Moreover, their new surface design resembles Wood.

What Does Rectification Mean?

It is an operation to rectify the edges of 30x30 and bigger floor, wall and porcelain floor tiles to eliminate the difference of size and obtain sharp edges.

What Does Lappato Mean?

It means rectifying the surfaces of colorbody porcelain tiles that have dull appearance to have a semi-shiny appearance. It is indicated by adding LP to the end of the code (for example K812246LP).

What Does Tonality Mean?

It is the difference of appearance and lightness-darkness difference between tiles produced at different time or at the same time. When the products that have tonality difference are tiled side by side, they resemble a chest board. Like all other manufacturers, VitrA distinguishes batches by tonality numbers. To prevent this tonality difference, the boxes of the tiles to be tiled in the same area should have the same tonality number.

What Does Calibration Number Mean?

During the firing process, tiles shrink by approximately 7% in order to have high resistance. This shrinkage depends upon size: smaller sizes shrink less, bigger sizes shrink more.

Floor tiles and porcelain floor tiles are measured and separated according to their size by using automatic measurement machines during quality separation process. These size grades are called calibration. Tiles are separated into 2 or more 3 different calibrations.

Before tiling, calibration numbers of tiles should be checked and it should be ensured that the calibration numbers of all boxes are same. If different, they should be separated and used in other areas. Otherwise, sliding will occur in grouting gaps.

How can I Make Sure That I Bought First Quality Tile?

All tiles sold by VitrA are first quality. We do not sell second quality products. The products which can be classified as second quality are broken during production process and sent for recycling.

Will The Color of The Tile Fade in Time?

Color of ceramic tiles never fade. All glazes used are resistant to discoloration and UV rays.

Is Using Ceramic Tile on Underfloor Heating Surfaces Suitable?

Ceramic tiles are suitable materials for underfloor heating. During tiling, appropriate expansion gaps should be left between tiles by the edges of the wall at certain intervals to cover up shrinkage and expansion caused by the floor.

What Kind of Products are Suitable for Around The Swimming Pools?

As the areas around swimming pools are wet areas, products which are specially produced against sliding are recommended. Non-sliding products manufactured as Class B according to the European Standards (DIN 51097) are recommended.

How Should I Clean My Tiles?

Please refer to the Section Cleaning and Maintenance of Tiles.

How Should I Clean Grouting Residues After Construction?

Please refer to the Section Cleaning and Maintenance of Tiles.

Why aren’t The Products Supplied with Single Tonality and Calibration and Why is This Information not Provided to us During Sale (in case of bulk supply)?

Ceramic tiles can be supplied with different tonality and calibration range due to production on different dates. The tonality number and calibration number, if any, of the tiles to be applied in the same area should be same. This separation can be made in expansion gaps in different rooms, floors and large spaces. Otherwise, tonality differences will occur. While placing an order, you should be careful about this information.

What Size of Tile Spacer Should be Used to Apply Products (Non-Rectified and Rectified products)?

We recommend that you apply non-rectified floor tiles and porcelain tiles that have the same calibration ratio with minimum 3 mm tile spacer, apply wall tiles with minimum 2 mm and apply rectified products with minimum 1 mm, better yet 2 mm tile spacer.

What are The Key Points for Grouting?

After choosing the suitable grouting, grouting material should be completely filled in grouting gaps. After completing the grouting application, grouting residues should be removed before they set, and a clean surface should be left.

Is There Any Direction Sign on Large Size Tiles Including 30X30 Product (produced in square form)?

There is an arrow mark on the back of Square Tile that indicates tiling direction and all tiles should be applied in the arrow direction.  The tiles which do not have any arrow mark on them should be applied with the same direction as they are taken out of the box.

What are The Key Points for The Application of Mesh Products?

If mesh products are applied in wet areas, nylon mesh or upper mesh option should be chosen. For wet areas, lower paper mesh should not be used.

What is The Importance of Expansion Gaps?

For large space applications, 1 cm expansion gap should be left every 7 meters and should be filled in with appropriate elastic material. It should be applied at closer distances in case of underfloor heating.
